Outside the wall, which is where the dynasty put its dead. The chedi is sixteenth-century brick and the teak viharn beside it is recent, built in the old proportions.

Quieter than anything inside the moat at the same hour.

What is said to be there

The Mangrai line is in and around the brick, and the wall was the reason: royal ash went outside it. The dead were kept on the far side of the line the living lived inside, close enough to be fed and far enough not to be underfoot. Stand here at dusk and the geography is the whole belief, laid out flat.

A tung. The poles are along the wall and the wat sells the banners at the office.

Offering a tung ตานตุง — A long narrow banner, raised at the wat, offered in a dead person's name. 20–150 ฿ paper or cloth. A metal one runs higher.
Pouring the water กรวดน้ำ — Pour a thin stream of water while the chanting runs, and say who it is for. Nothing.
