"what": "One thousand eight hundred and sixty-four curves between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. It is on the road sign, it is on the shirts, and it is what you will tell people when you get back. This page is about whether it stands up, and it does.",
"story": "**What the number has to mean.** Thai Wikipedia gives the Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son run by Route 1095 as about **245 kilometres**. Spread 1,864 curves across that and you get **one every 131 metres** — which sounds relentless until you have ridden it, and then it sounds about right.\n\nThe same article describes the road as winding *กว่า 2,000 โค้ง* — more than two thousand. So the two figures in circulation are close to each other, not far apart.\n\n**Counting it independently.** Every change of turning direction on the OpenStreetMap trace of this route — one lean, one curve — comes to **1,056 on Route 1095 alone**, and about **1,310 across the full 245 kilometres**. That is one every 187 metres.\n\n**Why that count is not a rebuttal — and why no count could be.** Ask how many curves this road has and the answer is another question: at what ruler? Sampled every kilometre it has about 105. Every 250 metres, 395. Every 30 metres — what this site publishes — 1,083. Every 10 metres, 1,117. The number does not converge on a true value as the ruler shrinks; it keeps climbing, the way a coastline gets longer the finer you measure it. Richardson found this in the 1950s and Mandelbrot named it.\n\nSo 1,864 is not a claim this page can confirm or refute, because it is not the same kind of thing as a measurement with its method attached. It is a count at somebody's ruler, and nobody published the ruler.\n\nWhat bounds the fine end here is the survey, not the asphalt: OpenStreetMap carries a point roughly every **40 metres**, and asking for a reading below that interpolates a straight line between two points that exist, which invents no bend. Volunteer traces also cut corners, smoothing exactly the tight stuff that makes the count.\n\n*Inference —* which is the useful conclusion: **an independent count at a stated ruler lands the same order as the sign.** Nobody publishes the survey behind 1,864 and this page cannot confirm it to the digit. What it can say is that the number is the right size, and that anyone who rides it and claims it is not exaggerating.",
"how": "If you want to count your own, the unit that matches the riding is the lean — every time you change which way you are leaning is one. The tally on this site uses four degrees as the smallest turn worth counting, which is about where a correction becomes a corner. Raise it to twenty and Route 1095 still gives 879.",
"today": "**What to brag about.** 1,864 is the headline and it is earned. The per-kilometre figure is the one that impresses other riders: **Route 1095 runs 5.71 curves a kilometre for 185 kilometres.** And if you took the 1263 shortcut, that runs **6.03**, and the Samoeng road runs **6.34** — the two densest stretches in the whole network, and almost nobody has a shirt for either."

That is a trade road to the Indian Ocean, and it was walked long before it was driven.\n\n**Then the dates.** The Highways Department built it up from a rough track into a **gravel road between 1957 and 1963**, about five metres wide. Asphalt came much later: a surfacing programme ran **from 1987 to 1990** in named sections — Hot to Mae Sariang, Mae La Noi to Khun Yuam, Khun Yuam to Ban Huai Pong, Ban Huai Pong to Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang to Mae La Noi — and the whole road was **finished in 1998**.\n\n**The northern road is younger still.** Work on the Chiang Mai–Pai–Mae Hong Son road, today's Route 1095, started in **1967** and the paving was not finished until the **early-to-mid 1990s**.\n\n*Inference —* put those together and the circuit as a thing you would ride for fun, on a road sealed the whole way, is **about thirty years old**. Anyone who did it in the 1980s was doing something else entirely: gravel, five metres wide, on a road that took a day and a half.\n\n**How many people do it now?** Not on this disk — nobody publishes a count for the loop. What is published is a symptom: the Wikipedia article on Pai records that in the November-to-March high season, visitor numbers swell to the point that the town has traffic jams and runs short of electricity, water and petrol. Pai was a quiet Shan market village before this road was sealed."

Where residents' freedom of movement or right to work elsewhere has been limited, the choice to stay is not free in the way a visitor might assume.\n\n**The argument for going,** as its holders make it: the residents are adults who have said in interviews that the income supports their families and that they would rather have visitors than not; boycotting a village removes the income without changing anyone's legal status; and deciding on someone else's behalf that they should not earn a living this way is its own kind of presumption.\n\n*Inference —* what this project can do is decline to pretend the question is easy, and note that the two arguments do not actually contradict each other — one is about the system and the other is about the individuals inside it, and a person can believe both.\n\n**Not on this disk:** current admission arrangements at any specific village, how the money is now divided, or the present legal position of the residents. Those are precisely the facts on which the argument turns, and this project has not verified them. Anyone deciding should look for recent reporting rather than relying on this page."

"story": "**Light.** The circuit is ridden in a day-sized bite and most riders leave late morning. Clockwise, the long westward run from Pangmapha into Mae Hong Son is an afternoon leg, and in the cool season the sun is low and ahead of you on a two-lane road with oncoming traffic. Counter-clockwise puts that same stretch in the morning with the sun behind. *Inference —* this is the single most underrated argument in the whole question, and it gets stronger the closer to the solstice you go.\n\n**Smoke, March and April.** The measured record says the smoke is worst in the afternoon of a still day and that it is worse in the basins than on the ridges. Riding a leg early gets the clearer air. Counter-clockwise reaches Mae Hong Son and the Pai basin later in the trip and later in the morning; clockwise gets Pai over with on the afternoon of day one. *Inference —* in the smoke months, whichever direction you pick, ride early and stop at two, and the direction matters less than the clock.\n\n**Water, June to October.** Route 1263 — the Khun Yuam to Mae Chaem cut — is the part of this network that the rains actually close off as a sensible option, and it is also the steepest. In the wet, drop it and stay on 108 and 1095. That removes one of the arguments for counter-clockwise, because the cut is easier taken as a descent toward Mae Chaem, which is the clockwise... no: the cut is ridden Khun Yuam to Mae Chaem going *counter*-clockwise only if you have already come down 108. Read the leg page.\n\n**Flowers, November.** Doi Mae U-Kho above Khun Yuam turns yellow with *Tithonia diversifolia* for a few weeks in November, and Khun Yuam sits on the southern leg. Clockwise puts Khun Yuam on day three or four, counter-clockwise on day two. If the bloom is the reason for the trip, go the way that reaches Khun Yuam on a morning.\n\n**Mist, November to January.** The sea of mist off Doi Kong Mu and at Pang Ung is a dawn phenomenon, so it requires sleeping in Mae Hong Son and getting up. Both directions can deliver that; what matters is that Mae Hong Son gets two nights, not one."

"what": "From late February the hills burn — crop residue, forest undergrowth, land clearance, on both sides of the border — and the smoke settles into exactly the valleys this road runs through. It lifts with the first rains. This page carries four years of daily figures for every town on the circuit, and says plainly where those figures are weaker than they look.",
"story": "Two sources were fetched, and they are printed together because they disagree.\n\n**The long record** is Copernicus CAMS through the Open-Meteo air quality service: hourly PM2.5 at ten points around the loop from 1 August 2022 to the day of the build. That is 15,050 point-days. Reduced to a daily mean and then to a month, the shape is not subtle. Take Pai: a July mean of 3.0 micrograms per cubic metre, a December mean of 9.9, a March mean of 26.1, an April mean of 29.8. Thirty of the thirty April days measured sat above 35.4 µg/m³, the figure the United States uses as its 24-hour standard. In July, across four years, not one day did.\n\nThe same shape repeats at every point on the circuit, and one thing about it is worth saying out loud: **Chiang Mai is worse than the loop.** Chiang Mai's March mean is 37.8 µg/m³ against Mae Hong Son's 29.1 and Pai's 26.1. The city you leave from is the dirtiest air on the route.\n\n**Where the long record fails.** In 15,050 point-days the model never once produced a daily mean above 99.4 µg/m³. Ground stations in northern Thailand have recorded far higher. A model cell is tens of kilometres across; a Mae Hong Son valley on a windless March morning is not, and the averaging that makes a continental model tractable is exactly the averaging that removes the worst hour of the worst day. *Inference —* read the monthly shape from this data and do not read the ceiling from it.\n\n**The ground record**, such as it is. Thailand's Pollution Control Department runs a national network and publishes the current hour. Its historical endpoint returned 404 on the fetch date, so what this site can show from it is now, not then. And there is a second problem, which is a finding in itself: **Mae Hong Son province — 12,765 square kilometres, the largest by area in the north — has one station.** It is 58t, in Mae Hong Son town. Pai has none. Soppong has none. Khun Yuam, Mae La Noi and Mae Sariang have none. Nobody official is measuring the air in the town most riders sleep in on night one.",
"how": "The practical version. **February is not the problem** up-country: Pai's February mean is 15.0 µg/m³ and no February day in four years cleared 35.4 there. **March and April are.** **May is over** — Pai drops to 10.0 and stays down. If the dates are fixed and they land in March, the ride is still rideable; what changes is that a viewpoint is a white wall, a long descent is done with stinging eyes, and anyone with asthma is having a bad week. A fitted FFP2 or N95 under the helmet is the mitigation people use; a surgical mask and a buff are not filtering PM2.5.",
"today": "*Inference —* the scheduling advice this data supports reverses the usual one. The cool season is sold as the season, and November to February is genuinely lovely. But the cleanest air on this circuit by a wide margin is **the rains** — Pai at 3.0 µg/m³ in July against 26.1 in March — and the hills are green, the waterfalls are running and the rooms are cheap. What you trade is dry tarmac."

Second gear holds the bike down a hairpin descent on the engine, the weight is nothing, every mechanic on the circuit has the parts, and it climbs steadily. *Inference —* if a single machine had to be named as the best fit for this specific road, the argument for the geared underbone is the hardest one to beat, and it is the cheapest thing in the shop.\n\nOn a **250–450 trail bike**, it is the highway. The suspension and the 21-inch front make broken edges and the 1263 a non-issue; what you pay for it is a buzzy, tiring hour on the four-lane section of Route 108.\n\nOn a **400–700 twin**, it is the driveway. Real brakes, real engine braking, enough power for the long straights — and 200 kilograms that needs two people to pick up on a wet concrete ramp where the second person may be an hour away.\n\nOn a **700cc-plus adventure bike**, it is fatigue. Nothing here is beyond the machine. But a steering input every few seconds for six hours is pleasure at 150 kilograms and work at 250, and the mistakes on this road are made in the last hour of a long day.\n\n**On the back**, it is everything at once — longer stopping, higher weight behind the axle, and a passenger who cannot see the surface coming. Plan about two-thirds the distance.\n\n**What does not change.** *Inference —* the circuit does not sort riders by engine size. It sorts them by whether they know what their own brakes do on the eleventh kilometre of a descent, and that is a question you can answer in one day on the Samoeng loop before committing to four.",
"today": "The measured numbers that sit under all of this: Route 1095 runs 5.71 curves a kilometre over 185 km, Route 1263 runs 6.03, and Route 1096 runs 6.34. Those densities are what a wrist, a brake and a transmission are each being asked to absorb, and they are the same for everybody."

Counter-clockwise reverses it — down 108 to Hot and Mae Sariang, up to Mae Hong Son, and back over the curve road last. Both are 600-odd kilometres. They are not the same ride.",
"story": "**The case for clockwise.** You hit the hardest riding on day one, fresh, on a light bike, before the panniers have settled and before four days of hills have taken your forearms. Day one is short — Chiang Mai to Pai is the least distance of any leg — so a slow, cautious first afternoon costs nothing. Pai is a soft landing with food and a mechanic. And the long, straight, fast southern run on Route 108 comes at the end, when you want to be pointing at home rather than at a hairpin.\n\n**The case for counter-clockwise.** The first day is Route 108 to Mae Sariang: wide, sealed, four to six lanes as far as Hot, and 265 kilometres of two-lane after it that never asks anything sudden. That is a long, cheap day for bedding in a rented bike, finding out what the brakes do, and discovering the rear tyre is ten years old while you are still near a town that can change it. You arrive at the curve road knowing the machine. Mae Hong Son comes on night two or three rather than night three or four, which matters if you want a morning there.\n\n**Where they actually differ.** Clockwise puts your hardest descent — 1095 dropping into the Pai valley — early. Counter-clockwise puts it last, on tired arms, and on Route 1095 tired arms are a real argument. Against that: counter-clockwise gets the rental bike's unknowns out of the way on the forgiving road, which is the same argument pointed the other way.\n\n*Inference —* the disagreement survives because both sides are right about different riders. A confident rider on a familiar bike should go clockwise and enjoy day one. A rider collecting an unknown rental should go counter-clockwise and spend day one finding out what they have got.\n\n**And then the season changes the answer,** which is the part the bar argument usually misses. See the grid on /which-way/."
