A naga dives to the underworld.\n\nThen, in the middle of that, number two: **batha lup phak**, the foot strokes the face. The one name in all thirty that describes the movement instead of drawing a picture — and it still reaches for Sanskrit to do it, *bāda* for foot and *vaktra* for face, where everyday Thai has *thao* and *na*.\n\nThe rest of the set is household: threading a garland, slicing a gourd, an elder sweeping the temple courtyard, a swan with a broken wing, a deer looking back over its shoulder."
