The 111 below come from a crawl run today. Four things worth knowing before you go out. CLOTHES HERE ARE SOLD IN INCHES, NOT IN LETTERS — ask อกกี่นิ้ว, how many inches is the chest, and เอวกี่นิ้ว for the waist, and know your own numbers first; a Thai brand called XLARGE publishes a chart that stops at XL and at a 36-inch waist, which is how little the letter tells you. ฟรีไซส์ "FREE SIZE" IS NOT A SIZE, IT IS A CEILING — the only useful reply is กี่นิ้ว, how many inches. THE THAI BIG-SIZE TRADE IS REAL and goes far past XL — 5XL and beyond, stated in inches — but it is at กาดหน้ามอ and The Chiang Mai Complex and it opens in the evening rather than the morning, which is exactly why no map has it. AND THERE IS NO MEN'S EQUIVALENT: the men's answer is a tailor, and this directory knows 67 of them.

And there is no big-size category anywhere: not in the open map's tags, not in the 583-place Thai apparel index read for this order. A shop that carries the size is not a kind of shop; it is an ordinary shop, and the fact lives only in its own name.

ONE — the Thai big-size shops. Night-market hours, a couple of hundred baht up, ranges stated in inches, and overwhelmingly women's. TWO — the international chains, which use European or American sizing: Uniqlo, H&M, American Eagle, Lacoste and McOutlet are all in Chiang Mai. THREE — have it made. Cheaper than it sounds, and the only route that works at every size; see the tailors' shelf. And a fourth people overlook: SECONDHAND. Used clothing arrives here by the bale from countries with bigger bodies, so a มือสอง rail is the one place in this city where a 3XL turns up by accident rather than by order. The trade-off is honest: one of it, no other colour, no other size.
