In Ban Haw, by the Night Bazaar, Yunnanese Muslims built a mosque around 1915–1917, and a market sets up outside it every Friday from about 5 a.m. to noon. After 1949, soldiers of China's Nationalist army (the Kuomintang's 93rd Division) built villages in the hills: Mae Salong (Santikhiri), Ban Yang, Ban Arunothai.
