What it is

The temple on the hill west of Mae Hong Son town. Two Shan-style chedis, a road to the top, and the view that gives the province its nickname.

The long version

Inference — the architecture is the province's history in one object. Mae Hong Son was Shan before it was Thai — part of Mawkmai, one of the Shan States, until the Anglo-Siamese boundary settlement of 1892–93 — and the chedis here are Shan and Burmese in form rather than Lanna. A rider who has come from Chiang Mai has spent three days looking at Lanna wats and arrives at something that is plainly not one.

The practical note: there is a road to the top, so this is a ride rather than a climb, and the reason to be there is the hour rather than the building. 'City of three mists' is a description of what is visible from up here before the sun gets to work.
