What it is

The Shan ordination festival, held in Mae Hong Son and across the province, most commonly in late March and April. Boys are dressed as princes for the days before they are ordained as novices.

The long version

Shan people are the largest population group in Mae Hong Son province, and this is their festival. The boys are dressed in ornamented clothing and jewellery and made up, and carried on the shoulders of relatives — their feet are not to touch the ground during the procession.

Inference — the collision with the rest of this site is worth stating plainly: the festival falls in the two months the air is at its worst. A rider who wants to be in Mae Hong Son for Poy Sang Long is choosing the smoke, knowingly. That is a legitimate choice and this page is not going to pretend the trade is not there.

It is also a religious event in people's own town rather than a display. Inference — the difference between watching and intruding is mostly about distance and about asking before photographing a child.
