The largest group in the hills of the province after the Shan, spanning the Thai–Myanmar border, and the people whose villages line Route 108 south of Mae Hong Son.

The Wikipedia article on the province is explicit that the Karen are not a single group but a mix of closely related tribes, and lists them among the seven groups making up 63 per cent of the provincial population alongside Lahu, Lisu, Lua, Miao, Chinese Yunnanese and Pa-O.
