What it is

A river village west of Mae Sariang at the end of a side road, on the Salween where it forms the frontier.

The long version

The Salween rises in Tibet and runs some two and a half thousand kilometres to the Andaman Sea, and for a long stretch of its lower course it is the line between Thailand and Myanmar. At Mae Sam Laep you are standing on that line.

Inference — this is the best detour on the southern leg and almost nobody takes it, because the long Mae Sariang day already feels long. It is worth rearranging the day for: a wide brown river, forest on both banks, longtail boats loading rice and people, and a far bank that is a different country with no bridge to it.

The road in is a side road off Route 108 and it descends steeply to the water. Inference — go in the morning, when the boats are working, and eat at the river.

Not on this disk: current boat services, prices, or whether any particular trip is running. The border is a live administrative thing and what is possible there changes.
