The long version
Thailand's position in the Second World War was its own complicated thing — an alliance under pressure, an occupation that was not called one, and a resistance movement inside the government. Japanese forces moved through northern Thailand toward and from Burma, and Khun Yuam was on one of those routes.
Inference — what makes this worth a stop on a motorcycle trip is that it is a local record rather than a national one: what is kept here is the relationship between a small Thai town and the soldiers who passed through it, including the ones who did not leave. That is a different subject from the campaign, and it is much less often told.
