What it is

A spring-fed pool at a cave mouth north of Mae Hong Son town, in its own national park, holding a resident population of large barb.

The long version

The park is Tham Pla–Namtok Pha Suea National Park, which also holds the Pha Suea waterfall further north near the border.

Tradition holds — the fish are not taken, and that is the reason there are so many of them and they are that size. Inference — the place is a short ride from Mae Hong Son on the road toward Ban Rak Thai, which makes it a natural first stop on a day spent north of town rather than a destination in itself.
