What it is

Pai's evening market runs down the main street every night in the season: food stalls, music, and most of the town's visitors in one place.

The long version

Inference — this is the most divisive thing on the circuit and it is worth saying plainly what it is. Pai in high season is busy, loud, young and commercial. Wikipedia's article records that between November and March the town has traffic jams and runs short of electricity, water and petrol.

If that is what you want for one night, it is genuinely good at it: the food is cheap and various, there is live music most nights, and the valley is still right there in the morning.

If it is not what you want, the answer is not to skip Pai — it is to sleep outside the town in the valley, come in for dinner, and ride out early. Soppong, forty minutes on, is the opposite of all of this.

Tradition holds — the night market is a Thai form, not a visitor invention. Every town on this loop has an evening market; Pai's is simply the one with an audience.
