ปาย · Pai
A river valley that became a destination, and is now busy arguing about what that did to it.
Christophe95 · CC BY-SA 4.0What it is
Night one clockwise. A small district town in a flat river basin ringed by hills, with more guesthouses, coffee and motorcycle rental per head than anywhere else on the circuit.
The long version
Pai sits on the Pai river in a basin at around 480 metres, which is the thing that explains both the climate and the smoke: cool air pools here at night, and so does everything else in the air.
What it is now is contested locally in the ordinary way, and this page reports the argument rather than joining it. Inference — what is not in dispute is the practical picture for a rider: it is the best-supplied town on the northern leg, it has mechanics who see foreign bikes daily, and it is the one place on the circuit where a room can be hard to find without booking in the cool season.
Now
The measured air here is the mildest of the circuit in March — a 26.1 µg/m³ monthly mean against Chiang Mai's 37.8 — and the province's single air monitor is a hundred kilometres away in Mae Hong Son, so nobody official is measuring it.
