What it is

Thai children fight professionally from single-digit ages. The Boxing Act sets a minimum age for professional competition; the English article says it "was largely being flouted".

The long version

What is measured. Research cited in the English article reports lower IQ in child fighters, correlating with the length of their training, and deaths in the ring do occur. At the 13th World Conference on Injury Prevention in 2018 it was put that up to three percent of the coming generation would grow up with learning disabilities unless children under twelve were banned from bouts.

What the paediatricians ask for. Adisak Plitapolkarnpim of CSIP is quoted asking for no head contact under fifteen, no competition at all under nine, and light head contact only between thirteen and fifteen — not a ban on the sport for children, a ban on the head. He also names the 2014 US Department of Labor findings on the worst forms of child labour, and says exploitation "still remains a serious concern".

What the other side says. A child fighting is earning, and in a rural household the purse is real money against a real shortfall. Gyms feed, house and school children who would otherwise be working. The sport is also a route out — every name on the people pages here started at eleven, twelve, thirteen.

What both sides agree on. Neither argument disputes the scans. The dispute is about what a family is supposed to do instead, and that is a question about rural income, not about boxing.

This project does not resolve it and does not pretend the two positions are the same size: one is a measurement and one is an economy.
