The route

↻ Clockwise

The last long haul before the four-lane run home.

↺ Counter-clockwise

Day one, and long. This is the leg that finds the rental bike's faults.

What it is

The emptiest stretch of the circuit. Sealed, two lanes, steep hillsides, few villages, and a national park in the middle.

The long version

The Thai highway article puts it plainly: from Hot the road runs along steep hills all the way to Mae Sariang. Between the two there is Op Luang, a gorge the Chaem river cut, and not a great deal else with a name.

Inference — the planning points are fuel and heat. This is the longest gap between towns of any size on the circuit, it is low and hot at the eastern end, and it is where a day that started late finishes in the dark. Counter-clockwise it is day one and it is a very long day one; clockwise it is the last real leg and it is the one that gets rushed.

PillionThink about it

Long rather than difficult. Fill up in Mae Sariang, not after it.

Nothing here punishes luggage; the distance punishes everything.
