Got the sport into the Olympic movement by taking the country out of its name.

What it is

The International Federation of Muaythai Associations, founded 1993, the amateur governing body, with 128 member countries.

The long version

In 2006 the sport was admitted to SportAccord, whose rules say no sport may carry a country's name. So IFMA amended its constitution and the sport became Muaythai, one word, for Olympic purposes.

The rest followed: the World Games in 2017, full IOC recognition on 20 July 2021, and a demonstration slot at Paris in 2024.

Inference — the price of admission was the adjective. A sport whose entire claim is that it is Thai had to stop saying so in its own name to be let in.
