Thailand's first Olympic gold, and it was at boxing, not at this.

What it is

Born 16 January 1973 in Ban Phai district, Khon Kaen, into a poor family. Won featherweight gold at Atlanta in 1996 — the first Olympic gold medal Thailand had ever won.

The long version

He came out of Isan, out of muay thai, and won the country's first gold in the other code. Then he played Nai Khanom Tom on television the same year.

Inference — that sequence is the whole relationship between the two sports in Thailand. Muay thai is where the fighters are made, western boxing is where the medals are, and the national story is told in muay thai regardless. Muaythai itself did not get full IOC recognition until 20 July 2021, twenty-five years after Somrak's gold.
