storyThe King's Guard, 1455
กรมทนายเลือก พ.ศ. 1998 · krom thanai lueak
Boxing becomes a government department with two directors and a payroll.
What it is
Under the Law of the Military and Provincial Hierarchy of 1455, boxing was folded into the Ayutthaya court as the King's Guard Department — with a sub-division, the Krom Nak Muay, the department of boxers.
The long version
Two director-generals, with the noble titles Khun Phakdee Asa and Khun Yothaphakdee. The boxers were picked by the king out of competition, and their duties were to guard him and patrol the palace — in peacetime by fighting each other, in war by going with him.
The historical term for one of them is ทนายเลือก thanai lueak, the chosen. It stayed on the books until the reign of King Mongkut, 1851 to 1868.
