The Glass Palace Chronicle dates the raising of the Shwedagon's new umbrella to the full moon of Tabaung, CS 1136 — 17 March 1774. The Thai chronicle places Nai Khanom Tom's fights at the festival for that event. The Burmese record does not mention the fights; the Thai record does not give a date.
So the national day is the Burmese date for the umbrella, with the Thai story hung on it.
