What it is

"Ancient boxing": the collective name for what was fought before rounds, gloves and a ring — now performed mostly as demonstration.

The long version

The English article is exact about the order of events: the term muay boran was coined to describe the pre-modern form, after muay thai had been introduced in physical education documents to distinguish the Siamese art from international boxing. The old thing was named by the new one.

This matters for what a visitor is watching. A muay boran demonstration is a reconstruction, performed by people who compete under modern rules, of a practice that stopped being competitive before any of them were born. That is not a criticism of it. It is what it is, and the shows do not usually say so.
