มวยลพบุรี · muay lopburi

Clever. Named for a man the king liked watching.

What it is

The central line, from the old Khmer-Thai city north of Ayutthaya. Its reputation is for angles and feints rather than force.

The long version

The Thai article gives the moment the adjective was attached. At Prince Urubongse's cremation, Nai Kluen To-sa-at of Lopburi fought in front of Rama V, who was pleased enough with the way he fought that the phrase chalat Lopburi — clever Lopburi — stuck to the province, and Kluen was made Muen Mue Maen Mat, the sure-fisted.

Its list of six is the most concentrated of any school: Erawan tosses its tusks, the giant carries off the lady, Rama draws the bow, the deer looks back, Hiran rolls up the earth, Hanuman presents the ring. Five of the six are out of the epic. For a city whose ruins are Khmer and whose monkeys are its main export to the postcard trade, that is either fitting or circular, and the sources do not settle which.
