What it is
The eastern gate of the walled city, at the head of Tha Phae Road, facing the river a kilometre away. Originally Chiang Rueak Gate, after the trading village outside it.
The long version
What stands there now is a reconstruction. The municipality and the Fine Arts Department rebuilt the gate and its lawn in 1985–87 from records, archaeology and a single old photograph; it is the only inner gate with a complete set of wooden doors.
Inference — the lawn in front is the city's living room: the Sunday walking street begins here, protests gather here, and the pigeons are a business. A gate that was demolished in 1948 to make way for the moat roads became, forty years later, the picture on the postcard. That is the whole history of Chiang Mai's road-building in one square.
