What it is
The Lanna word for an alley. Where a Bangkok address says soi, the old city said hom, and a few lanes still carry it in their names. This site uses it for the whole class of lanes between houses, which is where most of the city's road-kilometres are.
Root
ฮ่อม hom — a Kam Mueang word with no Bangkok cognate in this sense; standard Thai borrows soi from the verb 'to slice' and trok from Khmer. Kam Mueang keeps initial /h/ where Bangkok has /r/ or nothing: ฮ่อม, ฮ้าน (shop, ร้าน), ฮัก (love, รัก).
