Chiang Mai went on the tentative list in 2015 as Monuments, Sites and Cultural Landscape of Chiang Mai, Capital of Lanna: a nominated core of the old city to the outer walls and the Mae Kha canal, 5.30 km², with a Doi Suthep buffer of 165.84 km², 33 attributes, seven temples, five gates and four bastions. A twenty-year transport plan with one underground route directly under the old town was flagged as a conflict in 2019. The cabinet approved the nomination in January 2026 for the 30 January deadline.
