What it is

From the Inthaburi interchange on Route 32 in Sing Buri to Huay Kaew Road in Chiang Mai, 562.673 km, Asian Highway 13. The Lampang–Chiang Mai section was built in 1968–69 by the Lampang highway centre, two lanes, to shorten the road to Bangkok, and its final ten kilometres skirt the city as the Superhighway. Four-laning from 2001, most of it done by 2012. The 2025 counts on the city stretch read 67,150 and 62,422 vehicles a day.

The long version

Inference — the name is a fossil. In 1969 a two-lane road with a hard shoulder was a superhighway; the word stuck to the road while the road became a city street with traffic lights, and the highway department has spent the 2000s and 2010s digging under those lights one by one.
