An undated Lanna-era map of the walled city, with a portrait of a ruler at the left, the palace, the temples and the wall. It is a picture of a place rather than a survey of one: nothing on it is to scale and everything on it is where it belongs.
The long version
Inference — the useful thing about a map that is not to scale is that it tells you what mattered. The wall is drawn thick, the wats are drawn large, and the roads are barely there. A road was not yet a thing you drew.
