measurementThe grid score, zone by zone
คะแนนตาราง ทีละโซน
Inside the moat 0.67. At the outer ring 0.07. A perfect grid is 1.
How it was counted. Segments of drivable ways minus service lanes, bearing modulo 180 in 5° bins, length-weighted; H = −Σ p ln p; φ = 1 − ((H − ln 4)/(ln 36 − ln 4))². Zones are the moat square and radii of 3, 5.5 and 9 km from its centre.
What it is
Boeing's orientation-order index φ on the street network of each zone: the bearings of every drivable way, service lanes excluded, in 36 bins over a half-circle, weighted by length, turned into an entropy and rescaled so that 1 is a perfect four-direction grid and 0 is streets running every way equally. The square inside the moat scores 0.67; the band out to 3 km 0.17; 3 to 5.5 km 0.09; 5.5 to 9 km 0.07; past 9 km 0.03.
The long version
Inference — the founding grid of 1296 is still the strongest order in the city, by a factor of 9 over the outer ring. Outside the square the streets follow field boundaries, canals and whatever track was there before the ring came, which is what a score near zero means. Boeing's 2019 paper put Chicago near 0.9 and Charlotte near 0.0; the moat sits closer to the former, the suburbs to the latter, and the same city holds both.
