A large city sheet carrying the stamp of the Royal Insurance Company, dated 26 October. It is the first map on this site made after the train arrived in 1921, and it shows what the train did: the east bank built up, Tha Phae Road the commercial spine, the streets between the square and the river filled in.
The long version
Inference — an insurance company's stamp is the tell. Someone was pricing fire risk street by street, which means the streets were worth pricing, which means the money had moved off the river and onto the road.
How
Read off the sheet. It is bilingual, Thai above English, at 1:5,000. The moat is labelled คูเวียง KOO VIENG CANAL on every side. Eight gates are named: Chang Phuak, Suan Dok, Chiengmai and ประตูแสนปุง San Prung on the square, and Ta Phae, ประตูหายยา Hai Ya, ประตูขัวก้อม Kua Kom and Sakang outside it. The roads out are labelled by where they go, not by number: TO HANG DONG & CHOM THONG, TO SANKAMPANG, TO DOI SATE, TO LAMPANG, TO HUEY KEO. The teak houses have their own buildings marked, Borneo Office and Bombay Burma Office, and so do the British and French consulates. The railway station is there with RAILWAY'S LANDS, a rest house and a locomotive store beside it.
