Two and a half days in Lanna for the two of you, an hour from Bangkok by air. A teak house among rice fields, yours alone. An elder calls your thirty-two khwan home and ties the white thread on your wrists. Monks take your rice at dawn. A balloon lifts over the tea at Singha Park. Khwan is the vital essence a person is born with. Lanna counts thirty-two, one for each part of the body. A fright, an illness, a fall or a long journey can send them wandering, and a person whose khwan have strayed is not quite at home in their own skin. The rite calls them back to flesh and body. Lanna calls it hong khwan, calling the khwan; the wider Thai name is su khwan.
The one who calls is the mo khwan, usually an older man who has been ordained as a monk and left the robe, a pho nan. A caller with a moving voice is sought after. Lanna calls the khwan for the sick, for a child, for a novice before ordination, for newlyweds, for a new house, for someone setting out on a long journey, and to honour a guest who has arrived.

The mo khwan first honours his teachers, then sings the call in a courteous chant with a little Pali, naming the places each khwan may have wandered and asking it home: khwan oei, khwan ma, khwan, come. The guests sit before the tray with palms joined. The call takes ten to fifteen minutes. Then he ties the white thread: tie the left hand, the khwan comes; tie the right hand, the khwan stays. It stays on for about three days, until it greys.
The rite is a Lao-Tai folk rite kept inside Buddhist Thailand. It is not a Buddhist ordinance and not medical care. In January 2025 Chiang Mai's northern nobility held a royal form of it, bai si tun phra khwan, for the King and Queen at the Three Kings Monument.

Tham bun, making merit, is giving so that good comes of it, for you and for those you dedicate it to. In Chiang Rai, as across the north, the plainest form begins before sunrise: monks walk barefoot and silent through the lanes, and people kneel by the road to put rice in their bowls.

A sangkhathan is a gift of robes, soap, tea and daily needs to the whole community of a temple rather than to one monk, given with its chant. The rains retreat ends at Ok Phansa, Monday 26 October 2026; the month after it, 27 October to 24 November, is the kathin season, when each temple receives robes once a year from a sponsor. A temple with a sponsor's place still open takes your robes through its own committee.

Lanna ties each year of the twelve-year cycle to a relic chedi, and people go to bow at theirs. Phra That Doi Tung, on the mountain an hour north of Chiang Rai, is the relic of the pig year, which Lanna counts as the elephant; the first afternoon goes there. The relic for any year is below.

Hammered from sheet by the silversmiths south of the old city, the quarter around Wat Sri Suphan. A khan is the bowl the khwan tray sits in; yours carries your name.
The woven hem of a Lanna tube skirt, picked out with a porcupine quill, about five centimetres a day for a practised weaver. The best pieces sell for ฿6,000–10,000 in Mae Chaem.

An evening flight from Bangkok lands in Chiang Rai in about an hour and twenty minutes. You stay in a teak house among rice fields and lotus ponds outside the city, the whole house for the two of you, and the rite will be held there. Dinner is lit by small clay oil lamps, phang prateep, with a salo and a sueng, the fiddle and the plucked lute of the north, playing low. At the next table the tray-maker folds banana leaf into the points of tomorrow's bai si. The mo khwan comes to sit with you, and learns your names for the call.

At dawn you kneel at the gate of a village wat nearby and put rice in the monks' bowls. Before noon, back at the house, the mo khwan reads the call over the finished tray and ties the thread on your wrists, left first. Lunch is a khantoke, low round trays of northern dishes. In the afternoon the car climbs Doi Tung to its relic chedi, where the two of you give a sangkhathan.

At sunrise a hot-air balloon lifts the two of you over the tea rows and lakes of Singha Park, about 45 minutes in the air, with champagne on landing. Lanna calls the khwan for someone setting out on a journey: a short second call before noon, then the box is handed over, silver, silk, lacquer, paper and thread, one for each of you. An afternoon flight returns to Bangkok.

Up to Doi Mae Salong, a village founded by Chinese Nationalist soldiers, where oolong terraces replaced opium; tea at Choui Fong on the way. Then the Golden Triangle, where the Ruak meets the Mekong and Thailand, Laos and Myanmar face each other; a long-tail boat on the river, and the Hall of Opium, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation's museum of the trade. Back by the Mae Fah Luang garden at Doi Tung.
Lanna calls the khwan of a bride and groom as they begin married life. If you marry here, the morning of day one becomes the wedding, held at the teak house.

A rite in Thailand is not a legal marriage. A marriage is legal when it is registered at a district office, an amphoe; for a foreigner that takes an affirmation of freedom to marry from your embassy, translated into Thai and legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
