We are ants — long speeches are not our strong point, so we would rather point. Here are fifteen of our own pages, all photographed on the same Saturday. หกข้อที่พวกเราถือ · Six things we hold to

• เราไม่จัดอันดับใครWe rank nobody and we hand out no stars. We would never make the temples race each other, and the noodle shops are safe too.
• ไม่มีใครซื้อที่ยืนจากเราได้Nobody can buy a place in our list. Money buys the ad box only, and we keep a plain label on that box.
• เราอ่านจากป้ายจริงWe read real signs. A price on our pages came off the board by somebody’s door — we do not make prices up.
• เลขทุกตัวเราบอกที่มาและวันที่อ่านEvery number we carry says where we found it and the day we read it. When we are not sure, we write that we are not sure.
• เราไม่เก็บเงินสักทางWe charge nothing in either direction — readers pay us nothing, shops pay us nothing, and we take no commission, ever.
• เราเขียนสองภาษาบนบรรทัดเดียวกันWe write Thai and English on the same line, so the person who grew up here and the person who arrived on Tuesday read the same page.

หน้าบ้านเรามีช่องค้นหาช่องเดียวOur front door: one search box, and eight buttons we made big enough to hit on the first try.

เราทักก่อนเสมอThe first thing we say is a question — what do you feel like, and where are you going?

เราเปิดประตูเมืองไว้เก้าบานWe keep nine doors into the city, every board read from real signs. Nine, because nine is the good number.

เรานับเชียงใหม่ให้ครบทุกแถวWe counted Chiang Mai’s shelf row by row — 1,500 wats, 4,151 places to eat, 88 markets. Counting is the thing we are best at.

แล้วเรารู้ด้วยว่าใครเปิดตอนไหนAnd we know when they open. Here is one Saturday in the whole city, half a day at a time — 218 places awake at midnight, 1,117 by noon. We drew it from the opening hours we keep, so it cannot claim an hour the site does not hold.

เราแต่งการ์ดวันนี้ตามสีประจำวันWe dress the Today card in the day’s own colour — Saturday purple, Saturn keeping it, strength ten — with the day’s numbers set underneath.

ห้องน้ำไหนใกล้ เรารู้We sorted the toilets by minutes on foot. Nearly every wat keeps one open, free — take off your shoes, dress politely, drop a coin in the box if you like. We checked.

เซเว่นทุกสาขา เรานับเองWe counted the 7-Elevens ourselves. All 462 — including 34 that stand within sight of their own twin. We double-checked those.

เราวาดแผ่นดินจริงไว้ใต้หมุดOur city lies in a basin, so we drew the actual ground under the pins. We rank no viewpoint, and we let no doi win.

เราวางเทศกาลทั้งปีบนวงล้อWe set the whole festival year on one wheel — all 38 — and we rest a little red needle on today.

ล้อเก่ากว่าเรา เราแค่ตรวจเลขThe wheels are much older than us; we only do the arithmetic, and we show our work. Born on a Wednesday evening? That is Wednesday night, and it belongs to Rahu.

ตกค่ำ เราเปลี่ยนชุดWhen the sun goes down we change into our evening clothes and ask, quietly: shall we keep going?

เรามีลูกแก้วให้เขย่าเล่นBetween the bus times and the air numbers we keep an oracle ball, ready to be shaken. Every answer it gives is in our own words.

…และเราแอบมองดาวพฤหัสฯ ด้วย…and we keep a dial that looks out from inside Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, because the person who feeds us keeps clocks, and it rubbed off.

แตะปุ่มเดียว เราพาไปเองTap “take me somewhere” and we choose the place ourselves — one of twenty-thousand-odd, no questions asked.

บ่ายจริงๆ บ่ายหนึ่ง เราลากเส้นให้ดูGive us an afternoon and we draw it: lunch at 12:30, nails at two, massage at half three, the dentist, the market before it shuts. Same routing the page does — we do not draw a line we could not walk.
