PM2.5 is the smoke you breathe: particles under 2.5 thousandths of a millimetre, small enough to reach deep in the lungs. Here is the model's estimate for each town, coloured by Thailand's AQI.

These numbers come from CAMS, the European forecast of the air, on a 40 km grid. It smooths the worst hours. The Pollution Control Department's stations report at air4thai.com.

Fires

NASA's MODIS cameras ride two satellites, Terra and Aqua, each passing twice a day. They flag any square kilometre burning hot enough to see. Each ring here is a year, 2003 in the middle and 2024 outside; each tick around is a day. 90% of the fires fall between February and April.

Wind

Smoke goes where the wind goes. Each moving thread is a puff of smoke let go where that month's fires burn, carried by the month's average wind, 20 minutes of travel per frame.

u is the wind toward the east, v toward the north, Δt 20 minutes.

Arrows: the month's mean wind, 2023–2026, from the Open-Meteo historical forecast archive. Smoke also rises, sinks and rains out; this toy only carries it.

The lid

Chiang Mai sits in a bowl of mountains. On a clear dry-season night the ground cools fast, and the air on the valley floor ends up colder than the air above it. Cold air is heavy, so it stays down, and the smoke stays with it. The morning sun warms the ground, the warm air rises, and the lid lifts.

a rising bubbleT(z) = T₀ − 9.8 °C × z / km

Ground air that rises expands and cools 9.8 °C for every kilometre (the dry adiabatic rate, the dashed blue line).

where it stopsT_bubble(H) = T_air(H)

It keeps rising while it is warmer than the air around it (the black line). Where they match is the lid, H.

the boxPM ≈ E ÷ (u × H)

Smoke put in (E) shared through a box as tall as the lid and flushed by the wind (u). Halve H and the smoke doubles.

PM2.5 over a March day, Chiang Mai

Highest around 08:00 (48 µg/m³), when the lid is lowest; lowest around 15:00 (28), when it is highest. The air 800 m up is warmer than the ground on 68% of March mornings at 07:00 and on 1% of afternoons at 15:00.

The lid shapes each day; the fires set how bad a season gets. On February–April days with the least wind-times-lid (the bottom quarter) Chiang Mai averaged 36 µg/m³, on the most (the top quarter) 31. Upper air: the Open-Meteo archive, 2022–2026. Ground temperature: Chiang Mai airport's own hourly reports, since the model runs about 3 °C cool on hot afternoons there.

Can you see Doi Suthep?

The Chiang Mai test. Stand at Tha Phae Gate and look west. The skyline below is computed from elevation data, bearing by bearing, with the distance to each point; Doi Suthep's ridge is 10.8 km away. Slide the smoke.

how far you seeV = 3.912 ÷ b

A dark shape stays visible until its contrast with the sky falls to 2%: e^(−b·V) = 0.02, so V = ln 50 ÷ b (Koschmieder, 1924).

Why the sun goes red

Sunlight crossing smoke loses blue first, then green. What is left is orange, then red, and on the worst days the sun vanishes while still above the hills.

Light that gets through

what gets throughI = I₀ · e^(−m·(τ_air + τ_smoke))

Beer–Lambert: each layer takes the same share. m is how much air the light crosses: 1 straight up, about 10 near the horizon.

blue goes firstτ_smoke(λ) = AOD × (λ ÷ 550 nm)^−1.5

Smoke particles are about the size of a light wave and scatter short (blue) waves more than long (red) ones. Clean air does it more steeply still, λ^−4, which is why the sky is blue.

Why

Six dry months

Rain stops around November and comes back around May. Leaves fall, grass dries, and by March almost anything will burn. When the rain returns in May, PM2.5 drops to 5–10 µg/m³.

Corn

About a third of the north's farmland is corn, and about 80% of that goes to animal feed. Thailand needs about 8 million tonnes of feed corn a year and grows about 5, so it buys the rest from Shan State and Laos. Stubble is burned to clear the fields fast and cheap.

The forest floor

From January to May 2024, GISTDA counted 1.83 million rai of forest burned in the north, against 533,000 rai of cornfields: about three to one. Many people burn the forest floor believing it brings on เห็ดเผาะ (hed pho, earthstar mushrooms), ผักหวานป่า (wild pak wan) and bamboo shoots. Studies have not found more mushrooms after burning.

Across the borders

Of the fires in this map's box, 39% burned in Myanmar, 36% in Laos and 24% in Thailand (13% in the nine northern provinces). Thailand, Laos and Myanmar agreed the CLEAR Sky Strategy for 2024–2030 after their leaders met on 7 April 2023. ASEAN's haze agreement dates from 2002.

No-burn season

Chiang Mai bans burning each season: 15 February–30 April in 2023, 1 January–30 April in 2024, 1 January–31 May in 2026. A burn inside the ban goes through FireD (ไฟดี, 'good fire'), a permit system Chiang Mai University built in 2019: register at least 3 days ahead and the district says yes or no. It took more than 14,000 requests in 2024.

The law

Thailand's Clean Air Act passed the House 611 to 3 in May 2026. The Senate changed it, the House rejected the changes on 2 September, and as of 17 September 2026 a joint committee of 10 MPs and 10 senators held it.
