Most people take the bus up Highway 118 and are in Chiang Rai in under four hours. The road climbs out of the Chiang Mai valley past Doi Saket, crosses the provincial line at Doi Nang Kaew, and comes down through Wiang Pa Pao and Mae Suai to Highway 1. On the way there is a police box minded by a doll, a hot spring that boils eggs, and a second hot spring that is a decoy.

    A white and gold chedi on a 425 m hill, with the town and its fields below. Turn right at the junction. Open 06:00–18:00.

    Right onto road 3005 toward Ban Pong Kum. The grounds are free; a private soak runs about ฿100 for 30 minutes, a basket of eggs ฿20.

    Somewhere on 118The officer who never blinks

    There is a police stop on 118 manned by a life-size doll in a police uniform. Thailand calls them Jah Choey, Sergeant Still. The first stood in Bangkok in 2007 or 2008; sources disagree. A 2014 study at a suburban Bangkok crossroads found violations fell about a fifth while a model stood there, and the effect faded after a few days. In 2024 Bangkok promoted one to Sarawat Choey, two metres tall with cameras and AI.

    Right before the one you want, heading north, there is another hot spring with its own sign and its own steam. NaN: “Don’t stop, it’s a trap!”

    The one you want is Mae Khachan, at Ban Pong Pa Tong in Wiang Pa Pao: steam, a geyser you can see from the road, a ring of 80–90 °C water, and rows of stalls all around. NaN rates the amulet market here a great one.

    Across the road is a second spring area, nearer the foot of the mountain, with private mineral baths. We know less about that side.

    Longer, prettierThe Phrao road

    Leave Chiang Mai on Highway 1001 through Mae Jo, past the Bua Tong sticky waterfall, to Phrao. There Highway 1150 climbs over the hills to Wiang Pa Pao, where it meets 118 at km 91. Riders call 1150 serpentine, quiet, forested, with Lisu villages and long views. It is also the way round when rain shuts 118 lower down.
